Once you're getting consistent traffic (50K+/mo) or running a revenue-generating site, managed hosting (WP Engine, Kinsta, Cloudways) pays for itself in saved debugging time, automatic updates, and genuine performance improvement.

✓ Worth it: A good domain registrar

Use Porkbun or Namecheap for domains — they're transparent about renewal pricing and don't upsell aggressively. Avoid registering domains through your host; it makes migrating harder later.

✗ Not worth it: Domain privacy (usually)

Many registrars charge $10–20/yr for WHOIS privacy. Porkbun and Namecheap include it free. Don't pay for something you can get for nothing by choosing the right registrar.

✗ Not worth it: "SiteLock" security add-ons

Pushed hard at checkout by GoDaddy, Bluehost, and others. Usually $2–5/mo for features that Cloudflare (free) handles better. Skip it.

Common Mistakes That Inflate Costs

✗Buying hosting through a "deal" without checking the renewal price. A $1.99/mo intro that renews at $12.99/mo isn't a deal.
✗Registering your domain at the same company as your host. It complicates future migrations and often costs more. Register domains separately.
